The Swiss Railways watch
Switzerland is known for its punctuality, a reputation symbolized by the Swiss Railway Clock, prominently displayed in every railway station in Switzerland.
In the 1940s the Swiss Federal Railways asked Hans Hilfiker, an employee and engineer, to come up with a highly visible clock that would not only form the basis of their later corporate identity, but would help to guarantee on time departures as well. Hilfiker created his masterpiece in 1944. The copyrighted design, with its clear and easily read face, mimics the smooth running of the trains and incorporates clever features that demonstrate punctuality in a highly visible fashion. It has no numbers, but the clock is readable at a glance. Its second hand has become a symbol of Swiss punctuality.
Mondaine's original, authentic and copyrighted watch and clock collection is based on Hilfiker's classic. The Official Swiss Railways SBB Watch by Mondaine has become a legendary design in the Swiss watch-making world and has been named as one of the 10 classic watch-making designs to come from Switzerland.
